Journey through the Book of Mormon: Moroni 1 (I Will Not Deny the Christ)

2 For behold, their wars are exceedingly fierce among themselves; and because of their hatred they put to death every Nephite that will not deny the Christ.
3 And I, Moroni, will not deny the Christ; wherefore, I wander whithersoever I can for the safety of mine own life.

These verses reveal that the Book of Mormon is somewhat more complex than we give it credit for. In the post 4 Nephi wars, the aim has changed from ethnic/national conflict and into a war of religiously motivated genocide. Yet, it appears that a person of Nephites birth could be sparred simply by denying the Christ. The Lamanites were therefore content to allow a Nephites survive if he renounced his beliefs. This seems very different than the warfare at the time of Captain Moroni

That reality also makes Moroni’s unshaking faith in Christ even more inspiring. If all he had to do in order to survive was to quietly deny Christ and live among the Lamanites, then it is even more admirable that he refused to do that. Moroni’s faith was tested precisely because he had a very real choice. When we have a similar choice about whether to speak up about Christ, how do we respond?
