Journey through the Book of Mormon: Helaman 2 (According to the Law)

10 And it came to pass that Helaman did send forth to take this band of robbers and secret murderers, that they might be executed according to the law.
The Book of Mormon paints a pessimistic picture of the potential of the ordinary rule of law to deal with subversive threats such as the secret combinations of Gadianton. The implication is pretty stark. If we cannot improve the moral culture of society, then we cannot combat this threat. No matter how many rules we pass or regulations we promulgate, we will be unable to triumph over subversive forces. The moral character of the people is the greatest indicator of the ability to prevent conspiracies and plots against Liberty. I think this lesson from the Book of Mormo is a valuable one for us to internalize.
